On July 30, 2023, I preached on “The Sound of Silence” at in the Proverbs Series at Calvary Church of Souderton (no Simon and Garfunkel, though). While we often fear silence, dreading that “uncomfortable silence,” Proverbs encourages us to embrace silence, as an invitation to hear from God (see Prov. 10:19; 11:12; 17:1, 28; 29:9, 20). Isaiah 53:7 predicted that Jesus would come as silent suffering servant (“like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth”). Shortly before his death, Jesus was interrogated by the council, and Jesus “was silent and did not answer,” thus fulfilling Isaiah 53. Because of Jesus’ silence, we are healed.
