For over four hundred years, Israel and Judah were ruled by kings.  The monarchy, however, was a bad idea.  YHWH advised against it and most of the rulers did what was evil in the eyes of YHWH.  YHWH eventually allowed first the Assyrians to conquer Israel and then the Babylonians to conquer Judah.  The books of 1, 2 Samuel and 1, 2 Kings tell the story of the rise and fall of the Israelite monarchy.  We will examine the lives of righteous kings (David, Jehu, Hezekiah, and Josiah), evil kings (Saul, Jeroboam, Ahab, and Manasseh) and the real heroes of the narratives, the prophets (Samuel, Nathan, Elijah, and Elisha).  We will study and discuss crucial texts and draw out leadership principles (both personal and strategic).  We will also learn profound lessons from the examples of these individuals which we will then be able to apply to our own lives and as well as to our contemporary ministry contexts.
